What special strengths do you bring to the board? Governance experience as a Whakatane District Councillor. Leadership experience having been a Local Government second tier Manager with 48 staff and I’m a big picture strategic thinker.

What’s the best thing about being a board member for us? Being part of a great committed team trying to make a difference to the lives of the people we partner with and the environment.

What other community organisations do you belong to? I like to be able to list a few but I work full time and I am also a Whakatane District Councillor which takes up most of my spare time. So for now it is only Pou Whakaaro.

What special strengths do you bring to the board? I bring the gift of my Reo Maori and culture, and knowledge of Ngati Awa history and iwi hapu, as well as Tuhoe and Whakatohea, and the Whakatane district and how to contribute appropriately to our meetings.

What’s the best thing about being a board member for us? I have enjoyed learning about how a board functions and now understand the distinction between governance and organisation and based on that, have used those skills on another board I sit on.

What other community organisations do you belong to? I belong to several disability organisations that overlap including an advocacy group to the council, Maori Stroke Group, TimeBank, Permaculture NZ, Kaapo Maori Aotearoa Inc, Disability Support Services Consumer Consortium, Te Ika a Maui, Eastern Bay Villages.

What special strengths do you bring to the board?
1) Financial skills and acumen

3) Experience working with charities and not-for-profit organisations 
4)  Interest in working with charities and community organisations

What’s the best thing about being a board member for us?
1) Contributing to the community 
2) Sausage rolls at the meetings 
3)  Knowing that Pou Whakaaro is helping people and making a difference with their lives. 
4) Working with others from Pou Whakaaro and the other Trustees who have a great passion for the Trust and the work it does.

What other community organisations do you belong to?
1) Trustee of Life Education Trust EBOP 
2) Trustee of The E-Network Trust 
3) Trustee of the Whakatane District Mayoral Disaster Relief Fund Trust 
4) Member of the Whakatane District Council Risk and Audit committee 
5) Also I was previously the Treasurer and member of the Executive Board for the EBOP Chamber of Commerce for approx. 10 years.

What special strengths do you bring to the board?
Organised, well informed, able to network and research to find information/solutions, good community connections, been involved with teenagers and education for over 20 years, professional, positive, was PPTA women’s branch officer for many years so have the ability to see things from a workers perspective, empathetic.

What’s the best thing about being a board member for us?
Have experience working with Board of Trustees therefore know about the position they play in an organisation.

What other community organisations do you belong to?
Whakatāne District Council Sister Cities Committee member since 2014.

What special strengths do you bring to the board? Using my legal knowledge acquired over 30 plus  years of being in legal practice in the Whakatane area.

What’s the best thing about being a board member for us? I am passionate about the cause and being part of the outcome of the people we partner.

What other community organisations do you belong to? Active Rotarian since 2005

Wiel Jongmans

What special strengths do you bring to the board? My strengths are my experience as a Social Worker within the health system for the 20 years I have lived in New Zealand. I am passionate about my role as a trustee and I believe strongly in people’s potential, trustees and service users alike. I bring lateral thinking to the table with humour.

What’s the best thing about being a board member for us? I feel appreciated by my fellow board members and we all endeavor the same goal which is to encourage people to be courageous and achieve their dreams.

What other community organisations do you belong to? I am also (currently) the chair person for the Manawahe District Society Inc. This organisation ensures that the Manawahe community has a say in local government policies. We also liaise with the Manawahe Eco Trust who is very active in our area regarding ecological awareness and pest control.
